About This Call
The Art in Public Places (AIPP) program enriches New Mexico's public spaces through an innovative and diverse public art collection. Since its inception in 1986, the program has placed more than 3,000 works of art in all of New Mexico's 33 counties. The 2020 Acclaimed Artist Purchase Initiative seeks to diversify the state's public art collection by purchasing artwork from artists in all stages of their careers. All media in all genres, suitable for both interior or exterior display, will be considered for purchase. Artwork must be durable, permanent, low-maintenance and in compliance with ADA guidelines upon installation.
The project is open to artists who reside in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas. Galleries located in these states may also submit on behalf of represented artists. Artwork will be purchased for publicly accessible buildings throughout New Mexico, including amphitheaters, animal shelters, community centers, courthouses, educational institutions, fire stations, healthcare facilities, recreation complexes, rest areas, and senior centers. The artwork price range is $20,000 - $40,000, all-inclusive of materials, labor, museum quality framing, security hangers, pedestals, delivery, installation, insurance, taxes, commissions, and project plaque documentation.
Submissions must include an artist statement (2,000 character limit), current resume or curriculum vitae, and up to three images of previously completed work currently available for purchase in the specified price range. Complete image citations must include title, media, dimensions, price, year of completion, and description. A Submission Review Committee will score applications based on professional qualifications, demonstrated quality, and developed style. Regional Buying Committees will select artwork for purchase and permanent display. Artwork included in the final pool is not guaranteed to sell. The final pool will be showcased for two years. If submitted artwork is sold through another venue, the artist or representative must notify New Mexico Arts immediately. Artwork installed must be the same piece selected for purchase; substitutions and price fluctuations are not allowed after the submission deadline. Final payment will be made upon completion of the purchase contract and site verification by an Art in Public Places staff person.
