About This Call
New Mexico Arts Art in Public Places (AIPP) program and the Local Selection Committee at New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) seek an experienced public artist to participate as part of the design team for the public art project at Spaceport America. In collaboration with the design team, the selected artist will create integrated artwork for the Spaceport America Visitor Center, known as Spaceport Central, and/or the surrounding landscape. Up to five finalists will be selected for an interview, from which one artist or artist team will be invited to join the design team.
The artwork is to be located at an exterior location at Spaceport Central. High priority should be placed on the plaza area adjacent to the Flightline Tour loading zone and the earthen berm separating Spaceport Central from the security station/main entrance. Integrated artwork that promotes interaction with and exploration of the site, as well as a design that can be appreciated from above will be encouraged. Proposed artwork must be durable, low maintenance, permanent, suitable for exterior display, safe for both children and adults, and be ADA compliant. A variety of media will be considered. The selected artist will work collaboratively with the design team in design development phases, provide cost estimates, participate in value engineering, prepare design presentations and drawings, and provide construction oversight if needed.
A maximum of $30,000 has been budgeted for the selected artist's participation on the design team. The fabrication and installation budget is $170,000, which includes all necessary construction aspects, materials, labor, permitting fees, insurance, taxes, travel expenses, documentation, and other associated costs. The selected artist(s) may or may not be selected to fabricate and install the artwork. This RFQ is open to all professional artists or artist teams who possess experience commensurate with the project scope and budget. International artists experienced in creating large-scale public art are encouraged to apply. Employees of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and the New Mexico Economic Development Department are not eligible. Work samples should include 10-20 images.
