About This Call
The Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation's Project Spaces initiative, in partnership with the Iowa State Fair, requests qualifications for temporary public art to be on display during the Iowa State Fair, August 7–17, 2014. The Iowa State Fair, held annually in Des Moines, attracts more than 1 million visitors and is one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country.
Three spaces are available within the Cultural Center facility: a 24-foot square interior space on the first floor atrium with two stories of height; a 24-foot circular exterior space in the center of the courtyard with unlimited height; and two 20 x 48 foot exterior spaces on the hillside with concession stand awnings. Electricity is available to any location with advance notice.
The GDMPAF has earmarked $4,000 for the project, covering artist fees and materials. Finalists receive a $500 honorarium to create a design concept. Artists 18 or older are eligible; Iowa residents and those who can demonstrate a connection to Iowa are invited to apply. Submissions must include a two-page résumé with three professional references, six to eight JPEG images of past work illustrating two to four completed site-specific public art projects, and an Image Identification List (PDF) with project details. There is no application fee. All materials must be submitted electronically through CaFE at www.callforentry.org by April 4, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Finalists will be notified by April 21, 2014, with concept designs due May 30, 2014, and the selected artist announced June 5, 2014.
