About This Call

The City of Sugar Land is accepting applications for a Pre-Qualified Artist Roster for public art projects. The Roster will be used to identify and invite pre-qualified artists for commissions as projects are identified and budgeted, to submit paid conceptual proposals, and to connect artists with resources and opportunities. The Roster may also be made available to public agencies, private businesses, and other organizations seeking to commission artists for public realm projects.

Applicants must be practicing visual artists or artist teams, at least 18 years old, living in the United States and/or territories, and currently permitted to work in the United States. Full-time, permanent City of Sugar Land employees and project consultants and their employees are ineligible. Artists must self-identify as either Emerging or Established Public Artists. Emerging Public Artists have been awarded three or fewer commissions in the public realm not exceeding $15,000 per commission. Established Public Artists have been awarded more than three commissions in the public realm above $15,000 per commission and must submit work samples demonstrating sufficient experience. The anticipated budget range for artwork projects is $1,000 - $150,000 or more, including design, fabrication, installation, engineering fees, travel, shipping, insurance, and all other project-related costs.

Applications must be submitted through CAFÉ (www.callforentry.com) and include: artist information, a letter of interest (not to exceed 2 pages), a bio or CV (200 words max), three professional references from projects completed within the past five years, and five to ten work samples (JPG, MP4, MOV, or WMV files). Video and audio samples should not exceed three minutes. Applicants must identify their areas of expertise (select no more than two) and primary media (select no more than three). Review criteria include artistic voice consistency and clarity, relevant experience, strength of work in selected areas, quality of letter of interest, and suitability of materials and themes for public settings. Inclusion in the Roster does not guarantee a commission.
