About This Call
Pasadena Photography Arts announces an open call for the PPA Photo Award 2026: Excellence in Contemporary Photography (Open Theme). This annual award recognizes and promotes emerging photographers with residence in the United States exemplifying excellence in contemporary photography. Photographers must have a US bank account to complete the application.
The award is accepting entries through April 12, 2026, with results announced August 21, 2026. Photographers are invited to submit cohesive bodies of work between 10-20 images with an accompanying statement. Acceptable formats include analogue, digital, portrait, abstract, mixed-media, documentary, street photography, conceptual, still-life photography, landscape, alternative photography, and cell phone photography. No fully generated AI images are allowed, though AI as an editing tool (e.g., Photoshop, Capture One) is permissible. The jury panel includes Pasadena Photography Arts Advisors and guest juror Craig Krull, art dealer and founder of Craig Krull Gallery in Santa Monica. Entries will be judged on creativity, originality, quality, and responsiveness to the call.
The prize includes a $2,000 cash prize, Lenscratch feature, published interview on the PPA website, and a virtual hosted artist talk. The non-refundable application fee is $42. Applicants must be 18 years or older and legal residents with a primary address and bank account in the United States. Submitted photographs must be original works without watermarks and cannot be fully generated AI images. Projects must be previously unpublished, defined as not having 10 or more photographs exhibited in a gallery, published on another organization's website or platform, or included in a book. Projects self-published on the artist's own website or social media are eligible, as are projects in self-published books that have not received awards or accolades. Up to 2 projects may be submitted per award cycle, with each requiring a separate entry fee. Digital images should be submitted in .jpg format, sRGB color space, 1200 pixels on the long side, 72ppi, and no larger than 5 MB each. Files should be named as ProjectTitle_01.jpg through ProjectTitle_20.jpg without watermarks or other symbols in the filename.
