About This Call
Axis Gallery invites photographers to submit work that addresses the prompt "Portraits without People." The exhibition will open in March 2020 as part of Sacramento Photography Month.
Portraiture is a foundational photographic genre and a means of defining ourselves visually. This open call invites you to submit work that demonstrates your understanding and interpretation of portraiture as an expansive genre, not one strictly defined by the presence of a human subject. How do we define ourselves beyond our physical presence? Can the definition of portrait expand to include what lies beyond our physicality—passions, fears, places we live, the car we drive, the food we eat? Can photography convey who we are without including the human form?
Eligibility: Open to artists residing in the U.S. Work must be contemporary original photographic or video work, produced within the last three years and not previously shown at Axis Gallery. Photos should not exceed a framed size of 48" in the longest dimension. Videos must be 5 minutes or shorter and will rotate on a monitor installed in the gallery. Entry fee is $35 for three images/videos, with additional entries at $10 each (limit 10 total; videos limited to 3). Submit JPEG and video files according to CaFÉ guidelines. Juror: Roula Seikaly, independent curator and writer based in Berkeley, CA, and Senior Editor at Humble Arts Foundation.
Timeline: Entry deadline December 31, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Notification of acceptance by late January 2020. Shipped work to arrive by February 24–29. Hand delivery February 28–March 1, 12–5 pm. Exhibition opens March 6. Second Saturday Reception March 14 at 6 pm. Exhibition closes April 26. Shipped work returned at close of exhibition; hand-delivered work pickup April 26 from 5–6 pm or by appointment. Sales are encouraged; the gallery retains 40% commission on any work sold. Work will be insured at Axis Gallery but not in transit. Images of accepted work may be used for promotional purposes and featured in an exhibition catalog.
