Portraits of the Garden II: BLOOM!

Descanso Gardens' Sturt Haaga Gallery invites artists to submit work for "Portraits of the Garden II: BLOOM!," a juried exhibition opening March 1, 2017. The exhibition concentrates on flowers and invites artists to represent the flower in their artwork while suggesting its crucial role in reproduction, evolutionary change, and its central place in the web of life that includes pollinators. Artwork of any style and genre will be considered, including representational, metaphorical, or abstract work. Jurors will prioritize artworks that delve into the specifics found at Descanso Gardens and create an experiential connection between garden and gallery experiences.

All 2D and low-relief media will be considered. Most artworks will be wall-mounted salon-style, with limited space for 3D and pedestal-mounted works. Judging priority is given to 2D work fitting within 24" x 36" x 6" (deep) and 3D work fitting within 24" x 24" x 12" (height). Video or digital work must be accompanied by a suitable wall-mountable monitor capable of playing DVDs or computer files from a thumb drive; sound may be experienced only with headphones. All work must be original and created by the applicant, and selected works must remain in the exhibition for its full duration (March 7 through May 28, 2017). Artists are responsible for delivering and retrieving their work from Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011.

Entry fee is $60.00. Descanso Gardens members in good standing receive a 75 percent discount. Submit 1-3 images and/or 0-3 videos (1-3 total samples). Entry deadline is January 13, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Works will be juried by a panel of three independent experts from the greater Los Angeles area. This exhibition is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
