About This Call
Site:Brooklyn Gallery is calling for works across all mediums that engage with the intersection between portrait and identity. This juried exhibition explores how portraiture has expanded beyond its historical confines of religious and royal iconography. Successive generations of artists have interrogated received images of race, class, beauty, gender, and sexuality, democratizing both subject matter and practitioners.
The exhibition is open to artists 18 years of age or older working in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, photography, and video. Only original works may be submitted. Entry fee is $37.00 for up to three images, with a $10 media fee for each additional image (maximum 12 images total, or up to 3 videos). All entries must be received by December 10, 2019 at 11:59 PM MT. Notification of acceptance will be sent December 19, 2019. The exhibition runs January 31 – February 29, 2020, with an opening reception on Friday, January 31, 2020 from 6-9 PM.
Accepted artwork must be suitably framed to professional standards (maximum size 72" x 60" x 24" D) and ready for hanging. All artwork must be priced for sale, and Site:Brooklyn retains a 50% commission on sales. Artists are responsible for delivery and return shipping, and must provide their own insurance. Work cannot be withdrawn or sales shipped before the end of the exhibit. The juror is Claire Voon, a freelance arts journalist and critic whose writing has appeared in the New York Times, ARTnews, The Art Newspaper, Artsy, and other publications.
