About This Call
The Regional Arts & Culture Council and the Port of Portland invite artists and teams living in the U.S. to submit qualifications for 1 of 3 permanent public art installations as part of the construction of a Consolidated Rental Car Facility at PDX International Airport. Project installation will occur in late 2021. The Port of Portland values equity, diversity, and inclusion, and underrepresented artists are strongly encouraged to apply.
The PACR public art project comprises 3 separate opportunities with different budgets. Site 1 is an exterior sculpture at the shuttle turnaround (12'W x 20/40'L x 45'H, $250,000 budget). No kinetic sculptures will be considered. Up to 3 finalists will be selected and paid a $2,000 honorarium to develop proposals including digital renderings, material samples, budget and timeline. Finalists must attend a site visit and present proposals to the Art Committee; travel expenses will be reimbursed. Site 2 is an interior wall in the On-Grade Connector (50'L x 10'H, 500SF, $125,000 budget) featuring 2D or relief work. Up to 3 finalists will be selected and paid a $1,500 honorarium. Proposals must include conceptual information, illustrations, material samples, budget and timeline. Video conferencing may be required for presentations. Site 3 is a customer service lobby interior wall (approximately 359 SF, $10,000 design fee only) consisting of acoustical panels. The selected artist will provide a two-dimensional design as a digital file.
All artwork should be inspired by land and environmental stewardship, connection to place, and the region's topography. Commissioned artworks should represent artists of diverse genders, races, geographic origins, and ethnicities; reflect the region's creative and cultural heterogeneity; incorporate a variety of artistic mediums and aesthetics; be designed specifically for the airport environment; and be easily maintained with durable materials. Eligibility is open to artists living in the U.S. All commissions are inclusive of artist design fees, travel costs, insurance, fabrication, transportation, and installation.
