About This Call

The City of Tampa's Portable Works Collection is a rotating collection of over 600 artworks in all media, representing hundreds of artists collected by the city since 1985. The collection includes sculpture, painting, mixed media, prints and photography, exhibited primarily in public areas of municipal buildings. Using 1%-for-Art funds from city construction budgets, the collection features work of emerging and established artists.

The Tampa Convention Center is located on the waterfront in downtown Tampa and covers over 600,000 gross square feet with 200,000 square feet of exhibit space. Multiple locations within the Convention Center are being considered for artwork. Opportunities are mostly for two-dimensional work of varying sizes, though some sculpture and suspended artworks may be considered. All artwork should be crafted from materials that can endure a public environment. Subject matter is open but should relate to and be appropriate for its location. Interest has been expressed for artwork addressing the region, quality of light and environment, as well as the cultural heritage, diversity, and traditions of the area. Regional artists are encouraged to apply.

Artists must submit up to five images of existing works with title, dimensions, medium, price, and weight if necessary. A current professional resume (limit three pages) emphasizing public art experience and experience working with public agencies is required. The selection committee will prioritize existing artwork submitted and reserves the right to view artwork in person prior to purchase. Selected artists are expected to work with city staff and design team on timeline schedules, may be asked to deliver artwork and prepare it for installation, and may be asked to consider a commission of new work. Notification of selected artists is anticipated for Q3 2022, with artwork delivery in Q1 2023 and installation completion in Q2 2023.
