About This Call
The Long Beach Creative Group (LBCG) is hosting an open call for Pop-Surrealism artwork. Pop-surrealism is defined as an edgy art style with broad cultural roots including underground comix, punk rock, tiki culture, graffiti, hot-rod culture, skateboarding, fantasy art, and surrealism. It often incorporates cheerful, impish, or sarcastic humor. The call is divided into six categories: Surreal/fantasy, spooky, whimsical, tiki culture, comics, and graffiti/skateboarding/hotrod art.
Original works in the following media are welcome: painting, drawing, printmaking, wall-mount sculpture, sculpture, digital art, photographs, toys, and mixed media. Work must have been produced within the last five years. Maximum size in any direction is 48 inches, including the frame. All work must be for sale and ready to hang with proper picture wire and sturdy d-rings. Paintings on canvas do not need frames but edges should be clean. Works on paper are generally framed. Three-dimensional work may require a white, clean pedestal provided by the artist. Work must be neatly and professionally presented.
Eligibility: Artists who reside in LA County or Orange County, grew up in Long Beach but no longer reside there, or attend/graduated from CSULB or LBCC. Entry fee is $16 (non-refundable). Each artist may submit a maximum of 3 works. Submission deadline: Wednesday, March 22 at 10:59 p.m. MDT. Artists will be notified the week of April 3. Work drop-off: April 15-16, 1-3 p.m. Opening receptions: April 29-30, 1-4 p.m. The show runs April 29 to May 27, Friday through Sunday, 1-4 p.m. Artist pick-up: May 27, 4-6 p.m., or May 28, 1-3 p.m. Jurors: Francisco Gutierrez, Mick Victor, and Stephanie Han.
