About This Call
The City of Pompano Beach seeks to pre-qualify up to 10 artists to design vinyl wraps for utility boxes throughout the city. Between 2015-2017, the City plans to wrap utility boxes on major arterials and in several neighborhoods. The metal utility boxes sit on the ground at intersections and vary in size, with many around 5'x2'x4' feet. The goal is to reduce blight along corridors by transforming utility boxes into art and enhance the experience of visitors while helping prevent vandalization.
In the first round of installations, the City will wrap boxes in six areas, each with unique conceptual themes: Creative Arts District (Fine Arts/Black and White/Contemporary), South Dixie Highway (Industrial Crafts), Atlantic Ocean Beach Loop (Sun, Fun & Adventure), Federal Highway (Marine Industry), Collier City/Education Corridor (Community Residents), and Old Pompano (Agricultural). Each artist will be commissioned to develop designs for all utility box wraps for a particular theme, with the number of boxes ranging from 2 to 8. Artwork should be bold and readable from passing cars while containing intimacy for pedestrians. Humor is appreciated. Words are not permitted. Artists may propose pre-existing photographs, images, drawings, or paintings that will be modified for the utility boxes.
Each artist will be paid $200 per design with a minimum artist fee of $500. The program is open to professional photographers, graphic artists, digital artists, and other visual artists living in Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties. Experience in vinyl wraps or public art is not necessary. Artists must submit an artist statement (maximum 1000 characters), resume in PDF format, and up to 18 images of relevant past work. The deadline for submissions is May 15, 2015 at 11:59 PM MST through callforentry.org. Selection of artists and assignment to areas will occur May-June 2015, with installation of wraps anticipated for Fall 2015.
