About This Call
The Point Iroquois Artist-In-Residence program, offered by The Sault Area Art Center in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, provides three 10-day residencies for photographers, writers, and visual artists. The program accepts applications for residencies during the following dates: September 7-16, 2023; November 9-18, 2023; and April 18-27, 2024. The Point Iroquois Beach Cabin is located on the shores of Lake Superior near Point Iroquois Lighthouse in Brimley, MI. The cabin is a modern 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom structure with a full kitchen and internet service. A darkroom is available nearby. While there is no studio space in the cabin, studio accommodations can be arranged with a tarp and easel in one of the rooms. The location is centrally situated in Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula, close to hiking trails, Lake Superior overlooks, Tahquamenon Falls, Whitefish Point, the Sault Locks, Mackinaw Island, Pictured Rocks, and Kitch-iti-kipi springs.
One applicant will be selected from each category (photographer, visual artist, and writer) for a ten-day residency. Applications are accepted from individuals, couples, and cohorts of up to three people. Individuals are permitted to have one guest. BIPOC artists are highly encouraged to apply. During their residency, each artist will share their experience in one public program, demonstration, talk, workshop, or similar event. Each artist will contribute one original piece of work representative of their residency to the permanent collection of the Sault Area Art Center, to be delivered within one year, framed, bound, or otherwise gallery ready.
Application requirements include: photographers and visual artists must submit 6-10 images of their work; writers must submit 2 short stories, poems, chapters, scenes, or essays (maximum 2,000 words); all applicants must submit a Resume/CV, Artist Statement, and Statement of Intent. Artists must be 18 years or older. The entry fee is $30.00. International applications are welcome.
