About This Call
Poetry Scores Hawaii - Look Like What It Means is an international juried invitational exhibition open to artists 18 years or older. The exhibition features visual responses to 25 poems by Albert Saijo, a Beat Generation poet (1926-2011) who relocated to Hawaii in 1990. Poetry Scores Hawaii is a partnership between the Art Department at the University of Hawaii - Hilo and Poetry Scores, an all-volunteer international arts organization based in St. Louis that translates poetry into other media.
Artists must submit 3-5 JPEG images of works completed since 2012 for preliminary jury selection. Selected artists will receive a free copy of the Bamboo Ridge Press publication "Big Fish: Issue #100" and an invitation to create a new work on paper in any media not exceeding 30" x 40" that responds to and is titled after a verbatim quote from one of the 25 poems by Albert Saijo. Digital submissions of response works must be emailed to [email protected] by January 1, 2015. Physical works must arrive by January 15, 2015. The exhibition runs February 15 - April 15, 2015 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Campus Center Gallery.
Entry fee is $35.00 (non-refundable). Up to $2,000 in purchase awards are available, with juror award selectees invited to participate in future invitational and artist-in-residence projects at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Works on paper in all media are eligible, including prints, drawings, paintings, photographs, and collage. An online catalog will be published with hard copies provided to all participating artists. Return shipping via USPS Priority Mail is covered by the exhibition.
