Plein Air Plus 2022

The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences announces the seventh "Plein Air Plus" Competition and Exhibition. This national juried competition is open to all artists 18 years and older in the continental US. The juror, Juliana Ochs Dweck (Chief Curator, Princeton University Art Museum), will select approximately 50 artists to participate in the Paint Out on Long Beach Island during July 1st through August 31st, 2022. Artists may visit and paint the scenic seashore environment of Long Beach Island on their own schedule, choosing their own time of day, weather conditions, and locations.

Accepted artists will exhibit their paintings in the "Island Life" exhibition scheduled for September 17th through October 31st, 2022. The exhibition will feature selected artists' Plein Air works and/or studio paintings developed from their Plein Air studies. Two categories are available: "Classical" Plein Air (paintings completed on site without photography) and "Plein Air Plus" (paintings inspired by specific locations, with studies painted outdoors and completed in the artist's studio). All artwork exhibited must be for sale. Artists may submit up to four framed pieces within 12 square feet of wall space. A reception and awards presentation is tentatively scheduled for September; artists are not required to attend.

Awards include First Prize ($500 for Classical Plein Air and $500 for Plein Air Plus), one Second Prize ($250), one Third Prize ($100), and four Honorable Mentions. Entry deadline is May 16, 2022. Entry fee is $35.00 for 3 image submissions. Applicants must submit 3 images of previous work painted in the past two years (oil, acrylic, watercolor, or pastel), along with a 1-2 page resume, bio, and/or artist statement. Accepted artists will be notified by June 1st. The LBIF retains 40% of the retail price of sold work, with artist payment 45 days after exhibition close.
