About This Call

PlatteForum is an award-winning arts, youth development, and social justice organization founded in 2002 in Denver. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, PlatteForum teams youth with professional artists in intensive, structured, and long-term creative learning environments. The organization supports the creation and presentation of new art by contemporary artists while generating dialogue about the role of the artist and social justice in society.

The Artist Residency program is open to artists in all genres and disciplines, including established professionals, emerging artists, and graduate students. Local, national, and international artists are encouraged to apply. Residencies are typically 6-8 weeks in duration with four to five slots awarded annually from over 100 applications. Residency time slots follow the approximate schedule: Residency A (September-October 2023), Residency B (January-March 2024), Residency C (March-May 2024), and Residency D (June-July 2024). Selection criteria include artistic excellence, innovative ideas for public engagement and collaboration, and diversity of ideas, genres, and methodologies. Former Resident Artists may apply again after a three-year waiting period.

Resident artists receive a $350/week stipend, staff support, program administration, workshop support, youth workshop supplies, an opening event, press releases, marketing, professional documentation of the culminating exhibition or performance, housing for out-of-town artists, and transportation support. An additional $250 is offered for participation in the ArtMoves Podcast program, and a $200 stipend is provided for pre-residency planning. Free social-emotional support from Transformation Cooperative is available during the residency. Resident artists have 24-hour access to studio and workshop spaces with wireless internet and printers available throughout the facility. There are no residency fees.

Resident artists dedicate 6+ hours each week to work with high school-aged youth from historically marginalized communities in intensive workshops. In collaboration with PlatteForum staff, the resident artist creates, organizes, and facilitates a series of youth workshops on Saturdays. Each residency culminates in a public exhibition or performance where the work of the resident artist and youth are presented together. Resident artists also have the opportunity to share their artistic vision through PlatteForum's ArtMoves podcast. Applications require an artist statement (1000 character limit), a community engagement statement (1000 character limit), resume/CV, and 8-10 work sample images. Audio or video samples must be submitted as links only, limited to less than 2 minutes each. Entry fee is $35. Artists will be notified of acceptance no later than June 1st, 2023.
