About This Call

Call to Artists: Public Art for the Pike Place Market Waterfront Entrance Project. Submission Deadline: January 10, 2014 by 5:00pm.

The Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority seeks an artist to create permanent public art for the Pike Place Market Waterfront Entrance site, a 0.75-acre parcel along Western Avenue. The site will be developed as a low-rise, mixed-use project providing parking, low-income and workforce housing, expanded social service facilities, retail and restaurant space, and public open space with views of Puget Sound. The artist(s) will work with project design consultants and community representatives to develop the artwork. Artwork must be durable, consider maintenance and environmental impacts, be hands-on and appeal to kids. Use of or incorporation of alternative energy sources is favorable. Budget is $500,000, all inclusive, divided according to the chosen piece(s).

Eligibility: Open to professional artists residing in the Pacific Northwest region with a portfolio of professionally commissioned work and essential experience working in public process. Artists may apply as teams. Selection will take place in two rounds. First round: submit 5-10 images of past work (.jpg format), technical drawings sample (.jpg format), letter of interest (2,000 character limit), resume, and references. Finalists will receive $1,000 honorarium to develop site-specific proposals and will be interviewed by the Art Committee. Selection criteria include previous public art installations of comparable size and complexity, documented community-engaged practice, ability to complete projects on time and within budget, excellence in selected media, relevance to market setting and heritage, and strength of artist statement and resume. Timeline: Finalists selected by late January 2014; open house for public viewing of proposals February 24, 2014; artist selected March 7, 2014; design stage March-June 2014; installation November-December 2015.
