About This Call
The Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects, in partnership with the Office of Arts & Culture and Seattle Department of Transportation, seeks an artist or artist team (no more than two lead members) to join a collaborative design team for the Pike-Pine corridor, a major east-west connection to Seattle's central waterfront. The selected artist(s) will work with the city, design team, stakeholders, and community members to design integrated streetscape elements and/or original artwork on Pike and Pine Streets. Artworks must be durable and low maintenance in this urban environment.
The artist(s) will collaborate on design development, construction documents, and implementation of the artwork. They will meet regularly with the design team in person and via teleconferencing, provide construction documents with details, specifications, and cost estimates, and attend stakeholder and community meetings. Public presentations will be required, including to the Public Art Advisory Committee. The artwork will enter the collection of the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture. There is no guarantee that all elements of the design will be realized.
Project goals include leading people to the new waterfront, unifying corridor character and continuity, and creating gateways and nodes to activate existing spaces. The selected artist will receive a commission of $300,000.00 (including Washington State Sales/Use Tax) for design, fabrication, and installation, administered in two contracts: approximately $50,000 for design and construction documents, and $250,000 for fabrication, installation, and oversight upon approval of final design. The call is open to established professional artists residing and eligible to work in the United States with a record of successfully realizing projects of similar scale in the public realm. Students are not eligible. Application deadline: January 22, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Submit 12-16 images of work samples.
