Pictures at an Exhibition: A New Cycle of Inspiration

The Panama City Symphony invites visual fine artists to participate in a unique collaboration celebrating the enduring relationship between art and music. This exhibition and concert experience is inspired by "Pictures at an Exhibition," originally composed by Modest Mussorgsky in 1874 as a tribute to his friend, the painter and architect Viktor Hartmann. Later orchestrated by Maurice Ravel, the piece remains a beloved orchestral showpiece. Artists are invited to create new visual works inspired by music that was itself inspired by art.

This is a juried fine arts competition. Fifteen finalists will be selected for a gallery exhibition at Panama City Center for the Arts from March 13 - April 10, 2026. Finalist artworks will then be relocated to the concert hall for the Symphony's performance of Pictures at an Exhibition on April 11, 2026 at Barbara W Nelson Fine Arts Center, Bay High School, 1200 Harrison Ave, Panama City, FL 32401.

Each of the 15 finalists receives a $75 cash award. First, second, and third place winners will be selected from the finalists and announced at the Opening Night Reception on March 13, 2026. First place receives $1000, second place receives $500, and third place receives $300. A People's Choice Award of $750 will be selected by patrons and orchestra musicians attending the April 11 concert, with voting by paper ballot during the performance. All cash award payments will be distributed the week of April 13-17, 2026.
