Photographic Essence: Black and White Photography

Art Works Downtown invites visual artists to submit black and white photography for exhibition. This exhibit showcases photography using the black and white value scale to expose the essence of subject, expression, and composition. All forms of photography medium are welcome. Submissions will be considered according to photographic skill, creative expression, poignant narrative, and unique composition.

Eligibility: San Francisco Bay Area artists only (must live within 100 miles from San Rafael, California). Black and white photography only. Photographs must be framed and/or ready to install. Open to most subject matter and abstraction; images of explicit sexual content or graphic violence will not be considered. Size limit: artwork including frame and all materials must not exceed 60 inches. Original artwork only; no reproductions such as giclées. Original prints and editions are acceptable. Submissions must not have previously exhibited in the AWD 1337 Gallery. Entry fee: $40 for up to 3 entries. Discount provided for AWD Artist Members.

Submit 1-3 images through CallForEntry.org. Accepted work must be hand-delivered to Art Works Downtown, 1337 Fourth Street, San Rafael between July 28-30, 1-8pm. All work must be ready for installation with wall-hung artwork securely wired. Artist statement and resume required. Artist must complete and sign Consignment Contract during delivery. Exhibition dates: August 5–September 17, 2022, Thursday–Saturday, 1-8pm. Opening reception and Art Walk: August 12, 5-8pm. Second reception and Art Walk: September 9, 5-8pm. Pick up unsold artwork September 22-24, 1-8pm. Artists who do not retrieve work will be charged $5.00 per day storage fee. Works remaining after 30 days become property of Art Works Downtown.
