About This Call
The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture's Public Art Program is requesting qualifications from professional artists specializing in two-dimensional media (painters, printmakers, fiber artists, photographers and others) to design public art for a new pedestrian bridge located in the Terminal Four New Concourse at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. This opportunity offers the potential to create an integrated interior design for the bridge, including a large-scale terrazzo floor, sections of adjacent walls, ceiling and lighting. No experience with terrazzo or public art is required. The ability to work well with a team to create new two-dimensional expressions that can be translated into durable media and significantly enhance the experience for travelers passing through the space is the only necessity.
Opportunities for artwork include terrazzo floors approximately 300 x 35 feet and/or four adjacent sections of 10 ½ feet tall wall, totaling approximately 290 feet in length. The selected artists/artist teams will be required to work closely with the design team to integrate the artwork into the terminal design and construction documents. Design and engineering are anticipated to take place from April through August 2019. Concourse construction is expected to begin in 2019 and conclude in 2022. The total estimated budget is $750,000, including all costs related to design, engineering, fabrication, installation, documentation and administration. The amount available for design will range from $50,000 to $80,000 and will cover all costs associated with the design process.
Submissions must be made via CaFE at www.callforentry.org by Friday, January 18, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Required materials include a one-page letter of interest (1000 characters max), contact information for three professional references, a resume (no more than 3 pages, 10 point font minimum), and up to ten digital images of previously completed artwork (JPEG or JPG format, 1200 pixels or greater on longest side, under 5 MB file size). Each image must include title, dimensions, date of completion, estimated budget and brief description. City of Phoenix employees and Phoenix Arts and Culture Commissioners and their immediate family members are excluded from participating. Questions should be directed to Romeo Rabusa ([email protected], 602-534-8334) or Barry Sparkman ([email protected], 602-495-0893).
