About This Call
Phase V is a public art call for the design and installation of art benches and art bike racks in The Woodlands Arts District. Artists are invited to submit designs for up to three designs per location. The entry fee is $40 for the first design and $5 for each additional design.
Up to three semi-finalists will be chosen for each location. Art Bench semi-finalists will receive a $300 stipend paid on April 30, 2022. One finalist for each location will be selected to construct and install their design. Art Bench finalists will receive $8,000 total ($4,000 upon execution of Artist Agreement and $4,000 upon delivery and acceptance). Art Bike Rack finalists will receive $4,000 total ($2,000 upon execution of Artist Agreement and $2,000 upon delivery and acceptance). There are six art bench locations and six art bike rack locations available throughout The Woodlands.
Art Benches must be constructed of highly durable commercial-grade materials suitable for outdoor, hot, humid environments and maintainable for at least ten years. Bench seat height must be 16-19 inches above grade, designed to support a minimum load capacity of 400 pounds, and capable of withstanding 140 mph wind loads. Art Bike Racks must be functioning artwork designed to accommodate various locking systems and bicycles of different sizes, constructed of durable materials lasting a minimum of ten years with minimal maintenance. All designs must be appropriate for family-oriented public settings and free of sharp edges. Artists should review site photos, videos, and reference materials on The Woodlands Arts Council website and work conceptually with the chosen site and underwriter's vision.
