About This Call
The Peter Bullough Foundation in historic downtown Winchester, Virginia provides residencies to emerging artists and scholars, including those elevating voices and topics relevant to the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Applications are being accepted for spring 2023 residencies to work in private studios and enjoy the garden and former homes of Dr. Peter Bullough. The ideal applicant will be self-directed and able to work independently. Each awarded residency period is roughly four weeks and is shared with one to two other artists in residence. Collaborators in groups of two to three may apply in one application. Artists are encouraged to host a community workshop or lecture virtually or in-person during the residency.
Disciplines accepted include architecture, literature, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, music/music composition, playwriting, screenwriting, poetry, scholars, theatre, and the visual arts. Spring 2023 residency dates are: February 2-27, March 2-27, March 30-April 24, and April 27-May 22. Applicants must be able to attend one of these four time periods.
The Peter Bullough Foundation offers free accommodations for two to three artists in Dr. Bullough's former home, a renovated 1840's house with private bedrooms and shared common spaces and bathrooms. Private studios and workspaces are located in an adjacent building that also houses the majority of Dr. Bullough's book and art collections. Gardens connect the properties and are available as open-air workspaces. A $550 stipend is provided to aid in covering supplies, necessities, and food for the month. Selection is a multi-step process involving PBF staff, residency alumni, and board members. Selections will be announced 30-45 days after the application deadline. The PBF is not ADA accessible at this time. Entry fee is $5.00.
