About This Call
The Peter Bullough Foundation provides residencies to emerging artists and scholars, including those elevating voices and topics relevant to the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Applications are being accepted for spring 2022 residencies to use private studios and enjoy the garden and former homes of Dr. Peter Bullough in downtown historic Winchester, Virginia. The ideal applicant will be self-directed and able to work independently. Each awarded residency period is roughly four weeks long and is shared with one other artist in residence. Artistic collaborators in groups of two to three may apply in one application.
The Foundation accepts applications from artists working in the following disciplines: architecture, literature, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, music composition, playmaking, screenwriting, poetry, scholars, theatre, and the visual arts. Spring 2022 residency dates are: January 19 - February 15, February 17 - March 17, March 21 - April 18, and April 20 - May 18. Applicants must be able to attend one of these four time periods.
Accommodations include free housing for two artists at a time in Dr. Bullough's renovated 1840s house with private bedrooms and bathrooms and shared common spaces. Private studios and workspaces are located in an adjacent building that also houses the majority of Dr. Bullough's book and art collections. Private gardens connect the properties and are available as open-air workspaces. A $550 stipend is provided to aid in covering supplies, necessities, and food for the month. Selection is a multi-step process involving PBF staff, residency committee, residency alumni, and board members. Selections will be announced 30-45 days after the application deadline. The Foundation does not discriminate in its programs and activities on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, religion, creed, national origin, age, and/or disability.
