About This Call
Perspectives is a juried exhibition of regional contemporary art at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art during summer 2007. The exhibition provides an overview of contemporary art made in the Southeastern United States, centering on Memphis, Tennessee and including southern portions of some states in the Midwest. Works chosen will demonstrate how regionalisms have become strategies for dealing with local and global issues embedded in a broad visual and philosophical exchange.
The geographical area includes artists living within a 300-mile radius of Memphis, covering parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. Artists are invited to submit work in any medium. For sound, kinetic, or time-based work, artists must submit 12 still images through the application platform and send audio/video materials on VHS, CD, or DVD format to Michael Rooks, Curator, The Contemporary Museum, 2411 Makiki Heights Drive, Honolulu, HI 96822, postmarked by December 8, 2006. DVDs must be playable in standard DVD players, PC, and MAC formats.
Applications including 12 images and a current resume are due December 8, 2006. Jurying begins in December and continues through March, with first rounds completed through the application platform and final selections made through studio visits. The museum will pay one-way shipping of exhibited works. Perspectives will be on view from June 22 through September 9, 2007. Michael Rooks, Curator at the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii, and formerly Assistant Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, will jury the exhibition.
