About This Call

The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture is requesting qualifications from artists to work with a project team and the Parks and Recreation Department to integrate a public art enhancement for Perry Park in Phoenix, AZ. The selected artist will be expected to work with the community and city staff to design custom concrete treatments that will be a visually appealing and functional improvement to the park.

This is an opportunity for artists specializing in two-dimensional design with experience in community engagement. The selected artist will quickly design custom concrete treatments for designated areas of the park, such as the sidewalks and skate plaza area. Community engagement must occur before the design is developed and finalized. The artist will review concepts with the city and design team to ensure seamless integration into the space with regards to site-specific regulations. Once approved, the artist will work with a city-managed contractor to convert the final design into digital files depicting concrete patterns and colors in relationship to the site. The artist will oversee installation of the public art portion of the project, which will require project team meetings, review of samples, and site visits. This is a fast-tracked project requiring an artist who can begin research and design in summer 2022, with construction expected to begin in fall 2022.

The budget for design and construction oversight is not to exceed $65,000, covering the artist design fee and all costs associated with the design process (insurance, mileage, research, materials, etc.) and construction oversight. Fabrication costs will be determined as the project moves towards construction. Applicants must submit a statement of intent (1000-character limit), resume or CV (3-page limit per artist), an image list (1-page limit), and up to 6 digital images of previously created artwork in jpg format. The application deadline is April 25th, 2022 at 10:59 p.m. (Phoenix Time). There is no fee to apply. This project is open to any professional artist or artist team with demonstrated ability to meet the criteria, regardless of residency, race, ethnicity, gender, age or experience. No previous public art experience is required. Arizona artists are strongly encouraged to apply. City of Phoenix employees, Phoenix Arts and Culture Commissioners and their immediate family members, and selection panelists and their immediate families are excluded from participating.
