Perforated Image Walls Public Art Commission

San Gabriel Storage Owner, LLC is seeking applications from professional artists and artist teams to create an original, permanent work of public art titled "Perforated Image Walls" to be installed in the San Gabriel Artists & Makers Studios complex at 414 South San Gabriel Boulevard, San Gabriel, CA. The artwork will consist of four large wall sections of perforated metal—two on the West elevation and two on the East elevation of the building—fabricated and installed by the project's contractors. The selected artist or artist team will be awarded $12,000 for their design, which includes travel and all other expenses.

The project comprises four wall sections of perforated metal covering two walls of a parking and loading area along the eastern portion of the property. Proposed artwork should consist of solid gray metal surfaces and open perforations, utilizing all four sections. The artwork should be intended for public viewing in a prominent, 24/7 viewing environment. Artists are encouraged to consider the unique cultures, histories, and natural elements of San Gabriel and surrounding communities. The artwork may not include logos, copyrighted or trademarked images, or promotion of any kind.

The selection panel will consist of seven members including the project curator, staff from San Gabriel Storage Owner LLC, the founder of Artists & Makers Studios, two arts professionals from the San Gabriel Valley, and two community members from the area. Proposals will be judged on artistic excellence, relevance to the San Gabriel community, and suitability for the materials, fabrication method, and location. Submissions must include an artist's statement (maximum 1,000 characters), five to ten digital images of previous work, a detailed project description (maximum 25 pages) with drawings and schematics, team information with resumes and contact details, staffing agreements or contracts, and three professional references. The application deadline is October 6, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. A virtual site visit is scheduled for September 14, 2023.
