About This Call

The City of Olympia is seeking up to 15 loaned sculptures from Washington State artists for temporary display of up to one year on Percival Landing and for consideration for the Peoples' Prize purchase of one sculpture for the City's public art collection.

Eligibility: Washington State sculptors, 18 years of age or older. Artists may not submit works previously exhibited on the Percival Plinths. Each sculpture submitted must be available for exhibition July 2015-July 2016. Artists may submit up to two entries, with two slides each. All sculptures must be made of durable materials able to withstand up to a year's outdoor placement, including bronze, aluminum, steel, stone, and concrete. Work must be maintenance-free and graffiti resistant. Maximum weight is 2,500 lbs, with center of weight no more than 9" offset from center of plinth, and no more than 3'-6" above sculpture base. Sculptures must not present a safety risk to the public and should be appropriate for display in a public place. Artwork that includes advertising, logos, or is political, religious, or sexual in nature will not be considered. Artists must expect that sculpture may be climbed on or marked during exhibition.

Compensation and Details: Artists will receive a $700 honorarium for each loaned sculpture. Based on popular vote, one sculpture will be purchased by the City for permanent display, with a purchase price not to exceed $10,000. Work on display can be available for sale with no commission taken from artwork sold. Installation takes place the week of July 20, 2015. Artists are responsible for shipping works to and from the exhibit location and for securely attaching their sculpture to a provided 2' x 2' x 1/4" stainless steel plate. The City assumes limited liability not to exceed $1,500 for gross damage or theft. Artists will be recognized by a plaque and website listing with contact information. Weekly guided waterfront public art tours will be held in August, and new works will be celebrated with a public event launching one month of public voting for the Peoples' Prize.
