About This Call
The City of Denver Public Art Program in partnership with Denver International Airport (DEN) is seeking artists for a public art project at the new 61st and Peña Boulevard station along the University of Colorado A-Line train that runs between the airport and Denver Union Station in downtown Denver. The project budget is $350,000 USD. The goal is to create a signature artwork on the plaza that will engage the public and enhance the station's civic presence and connection to the surrounding neighborhood and airport.
The artwork should be iconic and timeless with a modern aesthetic, compellingly approachable and accessible, demonstrating advances in transportation/technology, and honoring the work of Federico Peña. The piece must be visible both day and night with no glare or pilot interference, low maintenance with minimal ongoing costs, and able to withstand outdoor environment and public use. Artists should consider the history of the Denver area and Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains (Arapaho and Ute tribes), as well as the location's commitment to sustainability and status as a growing tech hub. The artwork will be exposed to extreme weather conditions including harsh winters, hot summers, high winds, and lightning. The space is outside the FAA safety zone but extreme lighting must be evaluated to ensure airplane pilot safety. The artwork should not attract animals in the area.
Applicants must submit eight digital images, a résumé, and a statement of interest (no longer than 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. The selection panel will choose up to three semifinalists who will submit a detailed concept and participate in an interview. Semifinalists will receive a stipend of up to $1,000. All artwork in all media and materials will be considered, including light and sound. Artist proposals will be reviewed by Denver International Airport and the City of Denver's Public Art Committee including experts in construction and engineering to ensure conformity with city standards, maintenance, durability, and ADA standards.
