About This Call

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science is requesting qualifications from professional visual artists for interior and exterior artwork to be commissioned for the new museum currently under construction in Museum Park in Miami, Florida. The new 250,000 square foot science museum will include a 35,000 square foot aquarium, a planetarium, and approximately 30,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor science exhibits. Applications from architects, landscape architects, or other design professionals will not be considered unless included as part of an artist-led team.

The overall art budget is $2,400,000 for approximately three projects. Selected artists' budgets will include all costs of design, engineering, fabrication, permitting, installation, artwork transportation, special handling fees, special lighting, photographic documentation, travel and other reimbursements, liability, automobile insurance, and an identifying plaque. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and payment of prevailing wage rates, may apply.

The Museum seeks artwork that supports its mission and themes of People, Planet, and Prosperity. Artwork should provoke questions, awe, or conversation; provide new perspectives about physical phenomena; serve as a platform for visitor engagement; and underscore the dynamic quality of the building. Desirable attributes include interactive works (physical or digital), participatory pieces, kinetic or dynamic works, works responsive to environmental elements, and contemporary works of enduring significance. Proposed locations include the Energy Playground vertical wall, donor wall, café exterior wall, planetarium exterior walls, subterranean parking pedestrian ramp, and interstitial overhead atrium spaces. Up to five finalists may be selected for each location and will be provided with detailed plans and paid to develop design proposals. Finalists will be contacted prior to May 31, 2013, with exterior art installation prior to May 31, 2015.
