About This Call

The City of Alexandria, Virginia invites artists and artist teams residing in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia to submit qualifications for the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square Public Art Project. One artist or artist team will be selected to design, fabricate, and install a vertical sign for the new Pat Miller Neighborhood Square. The sign will celebrate the surrounding Del Ray neighborhood, with a maximum height of 15 feet and width of 2 feet. The words "Del Ray" must appear on at least two sides. The artwork should reinforce the unique Art Deco character of Mt. Vernon Avenue and raise awareness of the Del Ray neighborhood. The chosen artist or artist team must visit the site and meet with community members before completing the design proposal. All materials must be durable, require low maintenance, and remain attractive in various weather conditions.

The pedestrian plaza is located at 2311 Mt. Vernon Avenue, at the corner of Mt. Vernon and Oxford Avenues, in the heart of Del Ray. The project has an all-inclusive budget not to exceed $10,000. Eligible artists must be 18 years or older and reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia. Selected artists must be able to meet with the selection committee and attend at least one public meeting. Applications are due Sunday, April 21, 2019, 11:59 pm MDT. Artist finalists will be notified May 7, with drafts due June 25 and installation by September 30, 2019.

Applications must include six JPEG image files (no more than 1MB each) of past work, a letter of interest describing approach to the project, an artist statement describing general approach to public art, and a resume (maximum two pages). Applicants will be judged on artistic merit, ability to work with the community, collaboration skills, probability of successful execution, appropriateness of qualifications, communication and organizational skills, and application completeness. The selected artist will be required to sign a contract with the City of Alexandria and obtain all necessary permits. All elevated structures must be approved by a civil engineer.
