About This Call
The City of Albuquerque Public Art Program is seeking an artist to create a public art installation for Pat Hurley Park, located on the city's west side north of Central Avenue and west of Atrisco Drive. The park is a two-level park divided by a steep escarpment that historically defined the western shore of the Rio Grande. The neighborhood has called for a participatory role in the development of this artwork, viewing it as an opportunity to establish community ownership and pride while establishing links with the history, culture, and heritage of the Pat Hurley/Atrisco Land Grant area.
The project involves two phases. Phase I seeks an artist to work with neighborhood residents and young people in creating a mural or low relief sculpture artwork for the escarpment to attach to the retaining wall, fabricated in components designed as a system. Phase II will embed the artist and Phase I artwork in the final design phases of the escarpment trail design and construction, with continued development of additional artwork for the trails reflecting themes of history, culture, and heritage.
The artwork must be fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media safe and easily maintained in Albuquerque's southwestern climate. The Selection Committee will consider proposals including color, ceramics, metal, fiberglass, lighting and light fixtures, sculpture, and newer materials with proven viability in public works. $50,000 is available for the artwork program. The City of Albuquerque and selected artist will share copyright of the work. This is an open competition for artists residing in New Mexico. Five finalists will each receive a $500 stipend to create a model artwork for presentation to the Selection Committee, which will award the project to one artist. Submissions must include a letter of intent, current resume, images of five past projects (up to ten slides total), and a basic budget outline including engineered construction drawings, insurance, materials, and taxes. Questions may be directed to Makita Hill at (505) 768-3804 or [email protected].
