About This Call
The City of Pasadena is seeking artists for public art commissions at the Pasadena Center. New construction will enlarge the two Convention Center buildings that flank the historic Civic Auditorium and replace their current facade with an arcade characterized by an inviting and open presence. The plaza in front of the Auditorium will be expanded and the public spaces between and surrounding the buildings will be redesigned to encourage greater usage by the general public and Center visitors.
Commission opportunities include: Exterior location—one or two commissions at $75,000–$150,000 each, and one commission at $600,000–$750,000; Interior location—two commissions at $75,000–$100,000 each. Funding levels will be recommended by the Selection Panel and submitted to the Arts and Culture Commission for approval. Artists must submit either for the Exterior Commissions or the Interior Commissions, not both. Artists specifically requesting consideration for the large exterior commission may be considered for smaller exterior commissions as well unless you indicate otherwise. Submittal requirements apply to individual artists or teams; if applying as a team, designate the lead artist.
Submission requirements: Eight (8) images, preferably of completed public art projects, with no more than four (4) completed projects showing multiple perspectives of each. Include with each image a brief description including project sponsor, location, date, media, dimension, budget and other essential information. Submit an artist's statement describing your experience, philosophy and approach, and briefly describe your interest in a commission for Pasadena Center and what you can bring to this unique site (limited to 1000 characters). Include a resume listing completed public art projects with budgets and other relevant experience (two pages maximum; applies to all team members if applying as a team). Deadline to submit online: Tuesday, March 6, 2007. Finalists will be notified no later than April 6, 2007. Finalists must be available for interviews in Pasadena, CA on either April 16 or 17. Finalists traveling beyond Los Angeles County will be reimbursed for travel expenses; if applying as a team, travel expenses will be provided for only one team member.
