Part of the Solution: YES to ADU

The Los Angeles County Arts Commission Civic Art Program invites architects, engineers, designers, artists, and students to participate in a design competition to reimagine freestanding Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in Los Angeles County. This competition is part of the Homeless Initiative's Second Dwelling Units Pilot Program, which aims to promote affordable housing development in response to the region's housing crisis.

Winning entries will highlight design excellence, innovation in construction and materials, energy efficiency, and compliance with the ADU Interim Policy Summary. Designs must house two or more occupants in 400-1,200 square feet and work within a $150-200k construction budget. The competition is open to individuals or teams; at least one key member must reside, work, study, or teach in Los Angeles County. There is no entry fee. Submissions require 3-9 images and a maximum of 2 applications per participant.

Awards include a First Prize of $12,000 and two Second Prizes of $6,000 each. Winning entries will be announced at an awards event and exhibition in March 2018, followed by workshops and interviews with architects, builders, artists, and planners. Design competition entries must be submitted to the CaFE website by January 5, 2018, with hard-copy submittals due to the LA County Arts Commission by January 8, 2018.
