Parsing Sign and Image

Parsing Sign and Image is a juried exhibition seeking submissions that consider the influence of letters, text, signs and language on artistic practice. The exhibition explores how images convey ideas across languages and cultures, and questions the relationship between text as literal meaning versus text as graphic elements of pattern and design.

The exhibition runs September 14 - December 1, 2018 at The VETS Gallery, One Avenue of the Arts, Providence, RI 02903. All 2D and 3D media are eligible. Artists must submit 1-3 images in JPEG format (1200 pixels minimum on longest side, under 5MB). Entry fee is $30 for non-ALRI members or $25 for ALRI members. Artwork must be original, exhibition-ready, and appropriate for viewers of all ages. Maximum size is 48" wide by 72" high including frame. 3D work must have a footprint of 24" x 24" or less and weigh no more than 35 lbs. No video entries accepted. Artwork previously exhibited with ALRI is not permitted.

Accepted work must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibit. In-person delivery is September 10-11, 2018. Pickup is December 3-4, 2018. Notification of acceptance will be sent by email on or before August 10, 2018. The juror is Kaveh Mojtabai, Publisher of Artscope Magazine. Awards: 1st Prize $300, 2nd Prize $200, 3rd Prize $100.
