About This Call
The City of Sunrise, Florida is seeking to commission an Artist or Artist team to create one vibrant sculpture to be located on a new parking lot at the southeast corner of Sunset Strip and NW 12th Street. The sculpture should reflect the spirit of Sunrise and be impactful to pedestrians and passerby traffic both day and night.
The Call to Artists will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, up to three Artists will be shortlisted by the Selection Committee based on experience, credentials, style and previous work. In the second phase, each shortlisted Artist will receive a $1,000 stipend for the development of a detailed proposal with up to three conceptual design options. The selected Artist will enter into an agreement with the City in an amount not to exceed $72,000 and will be responsible for the creation and installation of the final work. The budget includes all costs: research, community and agency meetings, design, materials, permitting, fabrication, installation, photography, insurance, proposals, travel, sales taxes, lighting design, labor, structural engineering, and transportation.
The sculpture must be 7 to 8 feet tall, self-supporting, durable, and require minimal ongoing maintenance. It should be vibrant and timely, representing Sunrise's diverse community with a large Caribbean population. The City prefers sculptures with vibrant colors inspired by Caribbean culture, uniqueness, visibility day and night (can be lit from within), and community engagement elements. The sculpture must avoid water features and interactive elements. It should be designed and constructed in accordance with the Florida Building Code and Sunrise Code, with vandalism protection measures incorporated into the proposal. The application deadline is March 31, 2023 and is open to all Professional Artists nationwide with experience working with public agencies and professional engineers. Submissions must be made via CAFÉ at www.callforentry.org.
