About This Call

The Kirkland Cultural Arts Commission (KCAC) seeks proposals for temporary art sculptures for an outdoor gallery exhibition titled "Intersectional Voices" on Kirkland's Park Lane. Park Lane was designated one of the 'Great Places in America' in 2017 by the American Planning Association. The street features six display pedestals or plinths for three-dimensional works, each having a mounting surface area of 18 inches x 20 inches. The "Intersectional Voices" exhibition will feature jury-selected artworks from between one and six artists. The works are to be for sale; the City takes no commission on Park Lane sculpture sales.

This call is open to both emerging and established practicing artists residing in Washington state. Kirkland-based artists are strongly encouraged to apply. Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) artists are strongly encouraged to apply. The theme of this exhibit is "Intersectional Voices," chosen to reflect two resolutions that the City of Kirkland has adopted. The artwork should invigorate, inspire and energize the Kirkland community, communicate Kirkland as a safe, inclusive and welcoming place, celebrate diversity and honor social and racial justice. Selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend per sculpture. Artists whose work is selected for more than one plinth will be paid the stipend for each plinth that displays their work(s). The exhibition will run from August 2021 through June 2022, with a target installation deadline of August 16, 2021. Selected artists are responsible for coordinating the installation and de-installation of their work with City staff and for obtaining identifying signage for the artwork. If a selected artwork is sold, it will be replaced by a work pre-approved by the jury panel and the KCAC. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of any artwork will go to the submitting artist.

Proposed artwork should be weatherproof and appropriate to outdoor display over a sustained period. The medium(s) should not pose any hazard to the public and be appropriate to securely display on the designated plinths along a very busy pedestrian and automotive thruway. Plinths have a mounting surface area of 18 inches x 20 inches, and proposed artwork should be compatible with these surface dimensions. A jury comprised of Commissioners from the KCAC as well as artists and/or arts professionals from or representing black, indigenous and People of Color communities will review and select the proposed works. Applications are due May 31, 2021. Contact: [email protected].
