About This Call
This is a public art competition to design and construct a troll sculpture for Paragon Star Sports Complex in Lee's Summit, Missouri. The sculpture should be family-friendly and evoke a sense of whimsy and imagination, resonating with the spirit of adventure and playfulness. While drawing inspiration from the Fremont Troll's iconic presence, the design should reflect a softer and more approachable demeanor similar to creatures found in "Where the Wild Things Are." Projects under 10 feet in height will receive the lowest consideration.
The selected artist will receive a $15,000 design stipend, with half paid at project start and half upon completion. This stipend covers project supervision and oversight. Materials and construction costs will be considered separately and are not included in the stipend. The artist must be actively involved in the construction process through direct participation or supervision, willing to work with volunteer students and community members, and available to travel to Paragon Star for consultation and oversight. The final sculpture will be placed outdoors and must withstand wind and all seasons weather.
Proposals must include detailed sketches or renderings, a written description outlining the concept and intended impact, an estimated budget breakdown and materials list for construction, and an artist's portfolio showcasing relevant previous work. The call is open to all types of materials including concrete, wood, and metal. Proposals are due by July 15th, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. A selection committee will review submissions based on creativity, feasibility, adherence to project requirements, and alignment with the desired aesthetic. The selected artist will be notified by August 2nd, 2024. This opportunity is open nationally to all professional artists and artist teams, though the project advisory panel may have a preference for locally-based artists.
