About This Call
Site:Brooklyn invites artists to exhibit work that focuses on paper, as physical substance and/or subject matter. Paper, which replaced parchment and papyrus, is ancient, invented in China almost 2000 years ago and spread by Islamic civilizations of the eighth-century. Created from textile waste, paper is woven deeply into the fabric of modern life. It can be associated with the transformation of work, easy replication, industriousness, disposability, creativity, and experimentation. From the intricate constructions of Islamic bookmakers and Cubist papier collé to contemporary artists such as Ed Ruscha and Dorothea Rockburne, paper has been central to the development of art. Paper Works seeks to show artists, regardless of medium or method, that engage with this material's rich history, present, and future.
