About This Call

The Palo Alto Art Center invites artists working in all media to submit proposals for the Artist in Residence Program, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. This program reinforces the Art Center's mission while building connections between its exhibition and studio program and the larger community. During their residency, artists will collaborate with community members in various Art Center programs, culminating in a final exhibition at the Art Center.

Each artist will participate in a three-month residency with the resulting artwork(s) exhibited in the Art Center galleries following the residency. During the residency, artists must work on-site developing artwork(s) with studio space provided by the Art Center, attend an Art Center staff meeting to assist with program development, present at least one participatory workshop for the public, conduct an informal walkthrough of the exhibition for docents and staff, present a lecture during the exhibition period, and collaborate with Art Center staff to develop a related program such as a specialized workshop or Family Day activity. Artist honoraria for each residency is $5,000 and inclusive of materials. Artwork created during the residency will be loaned to the Art Center for the exhibition period, then returned to the artist at the close of the exhibition.

Applications must include an artist statement of interest with a project proposal, media, planned budget for materials, and proposed participatory engagement with community, as well as a resume. Applicants may submit up to 2 applications and must provide 6 images as work samples. Eligibility is regional (California artists). Timeline: Proposals due April 15, 2014; finalists selected May 1, 2014; finalists notified May 9, 2014. Three residencies are scheduled: June-August 2014 (exhibition Fall 2014), September-December 2014 (exhibition Winter 2015), and February-May 2015 (exhibition Summer 2015).
