Palmdale Yellen Park Sculpture

Phase II of Sam Yellen Park is seeking a sculpture commission for the park site located at 5100 E Avenue S in Palmdale. The park includes futsal courts, a dog park, multipurpose sports areas, playgrounds, and a small event plaza. The Public Art Commission recommends dogs, sports, and gatherings as themes, and community input identified two preferred themes: reflect on local landscapes (desert, Joshua trees, yucca trees, poppies, lake) and create meaningful, authentic, culturally appropriate artworks for community enjoyment.

The all-inclusive budget is $53,000, covering artist fee, proposal design, fabrication, welding, engineering, footing, subcontractors, equipment rentals, and all other expenses related to design, transportation, installation, and completion. The selected artist will receive a $450 stipend to submit a color sketch or digital image of the proposed artwork to scale. Sculpture must be original, family-friendly, and suitable for all ages. Materials must be durable and able to withstand harsh desert weather conditions (high winds up to 110 mph and extreme temperatures) with a projected lifespan of 20-30 years. Maximum height is 25 feet; maximum weight is 3,000 pounds. Sculpture must be installed with sufficient anchoring to prevent removal, tipping, breaking, or overturning due to wind, snow load, or seismic activity. If selected, the artist's design and installation plans must be reviewed by a California licensed engineer, and any welds must be completed by a C-60 licensed welder or inspected by a California licensed Certified Welding Inspector.

Applications are open to artists 18 years or older residing in California. Submit 6-10 images and up to 2 videos of previous work, artist resume, 3 professional references, and a statement of interest. Application deadline: June 14, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Artist must obtain a City of Palmdale business license before beginning work and provide a payment bond equal to 100% of the contract price.
