About This Call

Phase II of Sam Yellen Park is in progress and will provide full expansion of the park site, which was designed based on the community's vision. The park is located at 5100 E Avenue S in Palmdale and includes futsal courts, a dog park, multipurpose sports areas, playgrounds, and a small event plaza. Applications are accepted from artists residing in California.

This project seeks two ceramic tile artworks with a maximum size of 64"H x 105"W each. The all-inclusive budget is $31,500, covering the artist fee, proposal design stipend, student engagement, fabrication, subcontractors, equipment rentals, and all other expenses related to design, transportation, installation, and performance. One project requirement is to work with students from Yellen School and Buena Vista Elementary School to inform the final design. Artists must have experience working with children and will determine the type of engagement that best represents the project objectives and park themes. The Public Art Commission recommends dogs, sports, and gatherings as themes, and community input identified two themes: reflecting on local landscapes (desert, Joshua trees, yucca trees, poppies, lake) and creating meaningful, authentic, culturally appropriate artworks.

Selected artists will receive a $450 stipend to submit a proposal including student engagement plans and a color sketch or digital image of the proposed artwork to scale. Artwork must be family-friendly, original design, and made of durable materials able to withstand harsh desert weather conditions. Artwork is intended for permanent display with a projected lifespan of 20-30 years. Artists must outline their history with the material and suggest a maintenance schedule. Selected artists must obtain a City of Palmdale business license and comply with background checks required by the Palmdale School District. Artist will be required to provide insurance as outlined in the agreement. Applications must include artist resume, 6-10 examples of previous work, 3 professional references, and a statement of interest. Artists must be 18 years or older.
