About This Call
The City of Palmdale is seeking an artist to create a 152-foot wide, high-detail narrative mural on the façade of the Palmdale Playhouse in downtown Palmdale. The mural will feature historic theatrical programming and serve as a public art installation for the community.
The all-inclusive project budget is $75,000, covering the artist fee, proposal design stipend, paint supplies, equipment rentals, and other expenses incurred by the artist. The selected artist must provide insurance and obtain a current City of Palmdale business license. Community input identified two primary themes for the artwork: reflecting the history and impact of the Palmdale Playhouse through activities and celebrations, and reflecting Palmdale's diversity and community character. Proposed artwork must be family-friendly and cannot depict sexual conduct, sexually explicit nudity, or advertise any illegal activity.
Applications must include a resume, 6-10 examples of previous artwork showing high-detail murals with people as subjects, 3 professional references, and a statement of interest. The selection panel will review submissions based on creative engagement, quality of past work, alignment with the Public Art Program mission, suitability to project demands, responsiveness to site and community characteristics, and ability to work as part of a project team. Selected artists will submit a color sketch or digital image to scale by May 2, 2024, with mural installation beginning June 20, 2024 and completion by July 29, 2024.
