Palmdale Amphitheater Mural

The City of Palmdale is seeking an artist to design and paint a 17' tall by 39' wide mural on the Palmdale Amphitheater building at Marie Kerr Park, located at 2723 Rancho Vista Boulevard in Palmdale. The mural will be painted on the building facing the property's interior. Submitting artists should have experience designing and painting murals. The wall material is split face block and will be pressure washed, primered, and painted by the City in advance of the mural installation. Upon completion, the City will apply an anti-graffiti coat to the mural. Applications are accepted from artists residing in California and must be 18 years of age or older.

The all-inclusive budget for this project is $19,000, covering the artist fee, stipend for proposal design, paint supplies, equipment rentals, and other expenses incurred by the artist. Any necessary personal protection equipment must be purchased by the artist. The artist will be required to provide insurance as outlined in the agreement and obtain a current City of Palmdale business license before beginning work. Selected artist will receive a $450 stipend to submit a color sketch or digital image of the proposed artwork to scale.

Community input identified two preferred themes: landscapes (desert, Joshua trees, yucca trees, poppies, lake) and views (mountains, sunsets, sunrises, stars, foothills, blue skies). Proposed artwork must be family-friendly and cannot depict sexual conduct or sexually explicit nudity nor advertise any activity illegal under California or United States law. The proposal design must take into consideration a small memorial tree planted in front of the wall as part of the composition. Applications must include artist resume, 6-10 examples of previous mural work, 3 professional references, and a statement of interest. Important dates: Applications due June 14, 2024; Artist Selection Committee meets June 17, 2024; Concept design due July 8, 2024; Mural installation may begin September 24, 2024; Mural completion deadline October 6, 2024.
