About This Call
The Palm Springs Sun-up Rotary Club, in partnership with the City of Palm Springs Public Arts Commission, is hosting a one-day chalk art event at Smoketree Commons to raise money for K-12 art programs in the Palm Springs Unified School District. All proceeds will be donated to local schools for arts education. The event aims to educate students about various forms of artistic expression and temporary media.
The event will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012, in the parking lot at Smoketree Commons, 2465 East Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92264. Artists will be assigned an 8'x15' area and must complete at least a 4'x4' section. Artists will work from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with judging beginning at 3:00 p.m. and awards presented at 4:00 p.m. Chalk pastels will be supplied. Only chalk pastels in solid form and techniques commonly used in chalk art festivals are permitted; liquid pastels, acrylic paints, and fixatives are not allowed.
The event is open to local and regional artists 18 years or older, who may enter individually or as teams of up to four people. The entry fee is $35. Selected artists will be notified by Friday, March 23, 2012. Awards include: Best of Show ($2,000), First Place ($1,000), Second Place ($750), Third Place ($500), and Outstanding Mention ($250). Applications must be submitted online through the Call for Entry system by Monday, March 19, 2012, and must include a current resume or biography, an original sketch of proposed artwork, a brief description (not exceeding 1,000 characters), and up to three images of relevant past work completed within the past five years. Artwork must be original, appropriate for public viewing, and free of advertising or offensive content.
