About This Call
The Town of Davie is commissioning ten Broward County artists for a work for hire project to design and fabricate a painted design on a fiberglass horse sculpture. Each selected artist will be provided a prefabricated life-size horse sculpture and a dedicated workspace at a Town facility to create the approved artwork. Artists will have thirty days to complete the painting of their sculpture. Each selected artist will be paid $2,000 upon approval and completion of their painted horse.
Artists may submit up to three designs for consideration using the supplied Thoroughbred Horse template, with all designs submitted in the same application. Only one design will be selected per artist. The Town has selected five horse molds in different breeds and stances: American Quarter Horse (5'10"H x 8'L), Thoroughbred Grazing (5'H x 10"L x 20"D), Thoroughbred Standing (6'3"H x 7'7"L x 19"W), Running Mustang (50" at the withers), and Arabian Horse (6'H x 8'L x 20"D). Artists may list their preferences but are not guaranteed their selection. Each horse sculpture is constructed from fiberglass and will be shop primed flat white.
The theme is "Historical Cultures of Davie," which could include farming and fruit groves, education, cowboys and rodeo, flora and fauna, and Native American tribes. If Native American or tribal symbols are used, they will be sent to the appropriate Tribal Council for approval. Bright colors are preferred. No logos or words are permitted. All paint must be UV resistant. Designs that are religious, political, or sexual in nature will not be accepted. The ten completed sculptures will be placed throughout the Town at various parks and Town-owned facilities. Selected artists will fabricate their designs at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds and must sign a Waiver and Release Form and execute the Town's Letter of Understanding.
Eligibility: Open to all Broward County artists (professional to amateur) who currently reside in Broward County. Artists who are immediate family or business partners of Public Art Advisory Committee members or program staff are not eligible. Submissions must include an artist statement, examples of previous artwork (minimum 3, maximum 5), and a completed design on the provided template (maximum 3 designs per artist). The selection committee is the Town of Davie Public Art Advisory Committee, which will recommend proposed artwork for Town Council approval.
