About This Call
Paint & Write the Town is Artists In Action's signature summertime event open to all Oregon visual artists of all skill levels working in any medium. Artists create work inspired by scheduled locations in the Salem area, which can be created en plein air, in the studio, or a combination of both. Poets from the Mid-Valley Poetry Society and others are invited to write poems about the sites. Registration opens Saturday, May 30, 2026, and artists may submit up to three works until the deadline of Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 11:00 pm via ArtCall.org.
Entry fees are: AiA Members in good standing $30, non-member artists $40, and students (up to age 25) $20. Payment must be made by debit or credit card during online registration, or by check submitted by August 14th. All mediums and styles of visual art are considered, including paintings, collage, textiles, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and poems. Work must be inspired by the Paint & Write the Town location events and must be available for exhibition for the full duration of the show. Previously exhibited work in other AiA exhibits may not be submitted. 2D art must be no larger than 24" x 30" and ready to hang with wire. Artwork must meet professional presentation standards with no frame damage, dirty mats, or unfinished edges.
The resulting artwork will be exhibited at Elsinore Framing and Fine Art Gallery, 444 Ferry St SE, Salem, during October, with an opening reception and awards ceremony on Friday, October 2. Awards include ribbons and monetary rewards for First, Second, Third Place, Best Representation of Location, and up to three Honorable Mentions. A People's Choice award will be announced after the exhibition concludes. Artwork drop-off is Friday, September 25 through Saturday, September 26 (Mon-Fri 9:00-6:00, Sat 10:00-5:00). Pickup of unsold artwork is Tuesday, November 3, 10:00-5:00. Artists must be able to deliver and pick up artwork in Salem; shipments cannot be accepted. For poetry questions, contact Mike Shuler at [email protected].
