Outdoor Wall Sculpture Commission - Vista Cultural District, Columbia, SC

One Columbia for Arts and Culture and The Congaree Vista Guild are seeking an outdoor wall sculpture for the Vista Cultural District. The project is located at 1125 Park Street, Columbia, SC, with two walls to be covered: a street-facing wall measuring 21' W x 4' H and a sidewalk-facing wall measuring 13' W x 7' H. The artwork must cover a substantial portion of the available area and be permanently attached to the masonry wall by the artist. The design may highlight The Vista as the creative and cultural district of Columbia. Materials must withstand high traffic in a public and university environment, with resistance to high UV exposure, humidity, high temperatures, and adverse weather conditions common to South Carolina.

The selected artist will receive $16,500 to cover design, transportation, lodging, materials, equipment, labor, installation, insurance, and other associated costs. Payment will be made half as a deposit after contract execution and half after satisfactory completion. Three artists will be shortlisted and each will receive $250 compensation for conceptual designs. The work must be installed by April 5, 2025.

Eligibility: Professional visual artists or artist teams (up to five members) are eligible. Applicants must be US citizens or authorized to work in the United States, create public art or artwork suited for public spaces, and not be enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students in visual arts at the time of application. Application materials required: at least five images of artwork (up to two videos also permitted), artwork information for each image, artist statement, resume/CV, letter of interest, and current contact information.
