About This Call

Louisville Visual Art is transforming its warehouse at 1538 Lytle Street into a creative community hub in Louisville's West End. The remodeled building, situated in the Portland neighborhood, will activate 32,000 sq. ft. of flexible indoor space as well as exterior resources to support artists and serve as a nexus of activity for artists, educators, activists, administrators, and creative practitioners.

LVA is seeking a monumental, site-integrated outdoor sculpture for the property. The organization will consider multiple locations for installation, with long-range visibility as a priority. Artists may propose a freestanding work or an artwork architecturally integrated into one or more façades. Approximate areas for integrated artwork include: North façade at 122 feet wide by 33 feet high, and West façade at 66 feet wide by 33 feet high. The artwork should be highly visible along Lytle Street and from I-64. The sculpture should be informed by themes of artistic creativity's enduring power and the importance of nurturing the creative spirit, reflecting LVA's mission to support the region's diverse artists throughout their creative lifecycles.

Eligible applicants are professional, practicing artists who reside in the United States and can demonstrate experience executing monumental scale public sculpture projects. Applications must include: a letter of interest describing artistic focus and qualifications, resume/CV (15,000 characters maximum), 3 images of previous work with title, medium, dimensions, year, and optional 2-sentence statement for each work, and a budget for a past project of similar scope. Selection criteria include artistic merit, relevant skills and experience, alignment with project goals, site appropriateness, feasibility and maintainability, public safety and accessibility compliance, and artwork uniqueness. The project budget is $225,000. Applications must be emailed to [email protected] by October 24, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. EDT.
