Outdoor Mural - Maynard Sesquicentennial: Past, Present and Future

The Maynard Cultural Council is seeking a Massachusetts mural artist or team to paint a prominent town wall located at Naylor Court in the center of town. This mural will be part of an ambitious program of vibrant murals on buildings throughout the town.

Designs should emphasize contemporary and abstract styles, vivid design elements, and trompe l'oeil imaging. Special consideration will be given to artists who engage the local community, make clever use of the town's 150th anniversary, and can complete the project in early summer. The theme should reflect "Past, Present and Future" rather than strictly historical content. Applicants are encouraged to consider ideas related to developing culture and arts, making the downtown more active, and utilizing the town's water sources for recreation and celebration.

Eligibility is open to Massachusetts artists with previous mural painting experience. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae or biography, recent images of related work, an artist statement (max 150 words), and a brief written proposal with sketches (max 150 words). Up to ten different designs may be submitted. The mural wall is 600 square feet of cast concrete with some low seams and small air pockets. The wall will be scrubbed, sealed, and primed. Artists must cover finished murals with two coats of graffiti resistant sealer.

From the initial applicant pool, the Maynard Cultural Council will select 4 finalists to create detailed visualizations of their proposed mural. Finalists will be compensated $250 each. A jury of community representatives, Town Select Board members, Maynard Cultural Council members, and Maynard artists will select the winning design. The winning artist will submit an all-inclusive budget not to exceed $9,000. All contracted work requires proof of liability insurance. Entry deadline: May 15, 2021. Finalists announced: May 22, 2021. Finalist visualization deadline: May 29, 2021. Winning proposal announced: June 19, 2021. Completed installation: Summer 2021 (no later than September 15, 2021).
